The Economic and Social Council is an autonomous tripartite public institution of national interest, set up for the purpose of achieving the social dialogue between employers, trade unions and the Government, and building a climate of stability and social peace. The Constitution of Romania (revised in 2003) defines the Economic and Social Council as a consultative body of the Parliament and the Government in areas established by the Law on the ESC organization and functioning. The Economic and Social Council has an advisory function in working out strategies and economic and social policies, and it plays a mediator role at industry and national levels in case of disputes between its social partners. The Council helps to achieve, promote and develop social dialogue and social solidarity.
